'Minor' is a word to describe something not yet fully developed." The arrival of "Minor Snow" signifies the impending beginning of winter snowfall.

The "Minor Snow" solar term and actual snowfall are not necessarily related. The "Minor Snow" mentioned in the solar term and the snow mentioned in a daily weather forecast have different meanings. The "Minor Snow" solar term is a climate concept; it represents the climatic characteristics during the "Minor Snow" period, while "Minor Snow" in the weather forecast refers to snowfall of relatively low intensity. The ancient text says: "Minor Snow indicates that the weather is cold and about to snow, the ground is not yet very cold, and the snow is not yet heavy." This means that during the "Minor Snow" solar term, due to the cold weather, precipitation changes from rain to snow, but at this time, because "the ground is not yet very cold," the amount of snowfall is small and infrequent, hence the name Minor Snow. The small amount of snow, and the lack of snow accumulation on the ground, is the original meaning of the "Minor Snow" solar term. Like Rain Water and Grain Rain, Minor Snow is a solar term that directly reflects precipitation.
At the beginning of the Minor Snow solar term, the soil freezing depth in Northeast China has reached 10 centimeters. After that, it freezes about 1 centimeter more per day and night, reaching over a meter by the end of the solar term. Therefore, there is a saying that "Minor Snow seals the land," after which the rivers and streams gradually freeze. A farming proverb says: "If it snows heavily during Minor Snow, there will be a bountiful harvest next year." This has three layers of meaning: firstly, snowfall during Minor Snow means that the next year's rainfall will be even, without major droughts or floods; secondly, the snow can kill some bacteria and pests, reducing the incidence of diseases and pests the following year; thirdly, the snow has a warming effect, which is conducive to the decomposition of organic matter in the soil and enhances soil fertility. Therefore, the proverb "Auspicious snow presages a good harvest" has some scientific basis.
After Minor Snow, the weather turns colder. People should reduce outdoor activities appropriately, arrange their diet reasonably, and eat foods that lower blood lipids, such as bitter melon, corn, buckwheat, and carrots. Foods that are warm in nature and beneficial to the kidneys are suitable during this season. Foods that are warming include mutton, beef, chicken, and antler; foods beneficial to the kidneys include porridge made with cashews, water chestnut, and yam, as well as chestnut stew with meat, ginkgo stew with chicken, bone broth, and walnuts. In addition, eat more stews and black foods, such as black fungus, black sesame seeds, and black beans.
